Delmon News

From Buster Olney's Chat:

John (St. Paul, MN): Buster - The Delmon Young thing didn't exactly work out this year for the Twins, do you see them trying to move him this off-season? Thanks

SportsNation Buster Olney: John: Yes. His star is falling quickly.

I don't have much time to comment (don't worry, I'm in Dallas by myself the next two nights so I'll be sure to write something) but I'm still surprised by this. I just don't think they're going to get enough to justify bailing on him this early. I don't think it makes much sense to move him unless you're getting equal market value.

I think I asked you this in the middle of the season, but like the asshole you are, you didn't answer. Hypothetically, if the A's offered you Jack Cust for Delmon Young, would you do it?

Here's my question--what is equal market value for Delmon Young?

He put up an average-at-best offensive year for a corner outfielder, his power still hasn't developed, he doesn't seem very athletic, plays a shitty LF, and has a fat brother. Could Delmon be a DH by his age-27 season?

I know, I know. He's only 23 so there is still plenty of room for improvement.

I have no idea what other teams would be willing to give up for Delmon Young this offseason.

I don't know what fair market value is either. A bunch of shitty prospects wouldn't work. I guess if they could swing something for a 3B or SS who could step in and play 162ish with good offense and good defense I'd be pretty happy.

As far as Cust goes, if he played third I'd go for that trade in a heartbeat. Since he doesn't, I don't think so. I think I'd still rather take a chance on Delmon developing further. Although if it happened, I wouldn't hate it.

I plan on putting more thought into it for a post, but J.J. Hardy is THE target this off-season in my opinion. Right handed, would have had the second-highest SLG on the Twins, good fielding, and only 25. Apparently the Brewers have their next SS prospect ready to step in next season, so Hardy's available if they don't try to move him to 2B or 3B.

The Brewers don't need Delmon, but they could use pitching. I just don't have a clue what the Brewers want in return. I'd give up Perkins in a heartbeat.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm not ready to give up on him yet. Although he didn't hit many homers, most of the ones he did hit didn't just get over the fence - they were mammoth shots. So the power is there, he just has to be able to put that swing on the ball more consistently. Of course, the twins will teach him that hitting a three hopper the other way is more valuable than trying to turn on a ball and launch it into the left field seats, so his power development would probably be more likely elsewhere.

I don't really want to move him either, but if a quality 3b or SS comes on the market, with the Twins' "surplus" of OFers, I could get on board.

Despite the red flags, I think he's worth keeping until he starts getting more expensive, at a minimum.

It would be great if he can start to get an idea about how the strike zone works. If he can get a better handle on pitch selection, some of the power will return.
