Minnesota vs. SDSU

I hate Christmas-time. Well, not really, but the week or two right before Christmas really sucks for college basketball. Until the Holiday tournaments start, hardly anybody is playing at all. Yesterday, there wasn't a line on a single game. Nothing. There were only eight games total, and you couldn't wager on any of them. I almost died. True story.

Tomorrow night the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State will be coming to the Barn to get their doors blown off by the Gophers. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be leaving early from this one. SDSU is 3-5, with a loss to Centenary in the mix, and got beat by Oral Roberts by 29 on Saturday. The only slice of good news for SDSU is that their best player is a 6-6 Wing, Kai Williams, who might match up against Hoffbauer and Shamala. I'm guessing Tubby is smarter than that, and puts someone on him who is better than the average health club defender. Minnesota 88, SDSU 64.

Gophers Split and I Still Hate UND

Here is a recap of Sioux vs Gopher weekend in Grand Forks. This was suppose to updated daily but the hotel we stayed at used some F’ing internet cable that hasn’t been made since Apple stopped making their IIE Series. Of course they didn’t have any extra cables and Wi-fi was out of the question. This coming from Grand Forks newest and greatest hotel. You now get to enjoy yesterdays news today.

We arrived at the land of wind, tumble weeds and homophobia Friday afternoon. The first two things I noticed when stepping out of my car was 1) the town stinks like an enormous shit factory. I was told it is a sugar beet factory, but I don’t buy it. I think god has played a joke on the city and covered the entire place in invisible shit. 2) The only thing whiter then the snow up there are the people. We did see one token between the 2nd and 3rd periods of Friday nights game, but that was it. Otherwise the first non-white person I saw was Kyle Okposo. How funny is that? The first black person I saw was playing in a hockey game! I kid you not, that place is Hitler’s wonder land. Nothing but blonde hair and blue eyes, it is actually kind of creepy. I guess that’s why Ralph Englestad liked the city so much and decided to build a palace here.

As far as hockey, the Gophers deserved better then a split this weekend. They actually outplayed the Sioux for 5 of the 6 periods. 3 of those periods they actually dominated. The story of the weekend was the Gophers inability to score on Friday when they where out shooting the Sioux 30-8 at one point, yet trailed 1-0. On top of not scoring Friday the fat/drunk goalie decided to play like a complete D-bag in the 3rd period and give up two semi soft goals. On the Sioux’s second goal he decided to duck so the puck didn’t hit him in his mask. Nothing says good goalie like getting out of the way of a puck. At least I can still take the piss out him for the rest of the season. So I have that going for me. The only thing else worth mentioning about Friday night is the city of Grand Forks owns Mad Dog. I have never seen a kid take a bigger beating from a city in my life and I can speak from experience. Next to Jeff Frazee, Mad dog was the biggest disappointment of the night. I take that back, Mad Dog was the biggest disappointment.

Also, UND’s arena sells beer at the games and has two bars, one at each end of the arena. WWWWWW, I thought You would find that fact interesting since beer is the most important thing in your life (hopefully your cigarettes don’t take offence to that comment).

Saturday nights game was completely controlled by the gophers for the first 54 minutes. The Gophers jumped out to a 4-1 lead going into the third period and I think I am going to take most of the credit for that. Obviously Lucia read DWG on Thursday because they used my game plan just as I had drawn it up. The defenders played smart (RJ Anderson was still slow and soft) and the forwards did all of the little things that are needed to win on the road. The Sioux did make it interesting the final 6 minutes by scoring two goals and then pulling their french goalie for the final minute, but the Gophers held on for a 4-3 win. The victory broke my curse of seeing nothing but Sioux victories over the Gophers in Grand Forks. I would have whooped it up after the game but Grand Forks was still owning the Mad Dog and the bars wouldn’t serve Snake Jr even though he is two feet taller then Mad Dog.

Here is my meltdown from the weekend. I left Saturday nights game hating the Sioux hockey team more then ever before. Talk about a bunch of cheap, classless fucks. "Just because your team is the most overrated team in the history of college hockey doesn’t mean you can start taking cheap shots at the worst Gopher team since 1998 just for completely out playing You." "Talk about a classless bunch of Twats led by a classless neanderthal looking coach." Along with the Frenchman, You can now add Kozek to my list of most hated Sioux players of all time. I am also hoping he sustains a season ending injury in the next game or two. I know I will burn in hell for that comment, but it would be worth it to see that cheap twat get carried off the ice. One of the highlights of the weekend came Saturday night when Snake Jr. Got to hear my call Kozek an F’ing Cunt at the end of the second period. Looks like Jr. is all grown up.

Also, no word from Mad Dog since 10:30 Saturday night. I think Grand Forks owned him so much that it actually killed him.

P.S. That was Me who threw my panties on the ice Saturday night when that Sexy S.O.B. Oshie scored the Sioux’s first goal of the game.

Big Ten Rankings

Beautiful game last night, with the Gophers stomping CSU, but letting them back in just enough to let CSU cover the +21. I couldn't attend last night, and, of course, the game wasn't on TV, so I don't have much to talk about regarding it. I will say that 21 for Hoffarber, with the second most shots taken on the team, shows how much his confidence has grown. This is a good thing.

With just under a month to go before the Big Ten schedule gets going, here's a look at how the Big Ten teams stack up so far:

1. Indiana (8-1)
Good Wins: G-Tech, @So Ill, Kentucky
Bad Losses: None
Remaining: none

Rolling so far this season and looking like the class of the Big Ten. Beat Kentucky without either starting guard, and are still looking forward to getting A.J. Ratliff back from suspension. Gordon has been awesome, and the other newcomers have really helped as well. There's no shame in losing to a very good Xavier team at their place.

2. Michigan St (7-1)
Good Wins: @Missouri, NC State, @BYU
Bad Losses: None
Remaining: Texas

The Spartans are doing what they need to, their only loss being against UCLA on a neutral court, where they actually lead for most of the game before letting it slip away. Three very good wins, but nothing that really stands out yet. They'll have their shot against Texas.

3. Illinois (5-3)
Good Wins: @Hawaii, Arizona St, Oklahoma St
Bad Losses: Arizona
Remaining Impact NC games: @Missouri

Looking good this season. Losing to Arizona wouldn't normally be a bad loss, even at home, but they had a double digit lead for a big chunk of the game, and ended up letting it slip away before losing in overtime. The Illini play very tough defense on the perimeter, but struggle a bit against good post players.

4. Ohio St (4-3)
Good Wins: Syracuse
Bad Losses: None

Will probably be ok, but haven't really shown much so far. The win against Syracuse is nice, but the Orange are very up and down so far this season. In three other chances to impress - against UNC, Butler, and Texas A&M - they've come short, including losing by 23 against A&M. Really not very impressive thus far.

5. Wisconsin (6-2)
Good Wins: Georgia
Bad Losses: Marquette
Remaining: @Texas

The Badgers haven't been all that impressive, but haven't really done anything wrong yet either, as they try to replace Alando Tucker. I'll say this, Trevon Hughes is a better point guard than Kammron Taylor was.

6. Minnesota (6-1)
Good Wins: @Iowa St
Bad Losses: None
Remaining: @UNLV

As much as the optimism is flying, they really haven't done anything special, which is a clear sign of just how far the program had fallen. The win at Iowa St, while wouldn't mean much to many programs, was a huge win for the Gophers. No shame in losing @ FSU. With only the game @ UNLV remaining as a quality game in non-conference, we'll likely have to wait for the Big Ten season to know just how good this team is.

7. Purdue (5-2)
Good Wins: None
Bad Losses: @Missouri, @Clemson
Remaining: Louisvile, @Iowa St

The Boilers have had their chances to show something so far, but have let leads against both Missouri and against Clemson get away from them in the end, so they have no good wins to show for it. The fact that they are such a young team, and that they were able to have those leads at all against good teams, both on the road, shows me that they have the ability to be a top tier Big Ten team, if they can only put it all together. They should end up being better than this #7 ranking.

8. Penn St (4-4)
Good Wins: Virginia Tech, Seton Hall
Bad Losses: South Carolina, UCF, Rider
Remaining: None

Very tough team to evaluate right now. I had high hopes for them this year, with Claxton and Cornley back, but they've been really up and down. Of all teams, they have the most good wins and bad losses combined. I'm thinking they're going to be the kind of team that isn't really dangerous except at home, and will probably knock off a team or two they shouldn't there.

9. Michigan (3-6)
Good Wins: None
Bad Losses: Western Kentucky, @Harvard
Remaining: UCLA

The bottom three could be here in any order, but I guess I have more hope for Michigan that for the other two. Michigan always has a non-conference schedule as if they were a top tier team, when in fact they are horrible. They have already lost to, and been non-competitive, against Duke, Georgetown, and Butler, with UCLA still to come. The losses to Harvard and W. Kentucky don't help when you have that kind of schedule. They'll probably win a game or two they probably shouldn't in the Big Ten, but they don't look good so far.

10. Iowa (6-5)
Good Wins: None
Bad Losses: LA-Monroe, Utah St, @Iowa St
Remaining: Drake

Even worse than Michigan. The transfer of Tyler Smith and the injury to Tony Freeman have really torpedoed the Hawkeyes season, which was likely going to be bad anyway. Freeman is close to coming back, he actually played 24 minutes against N. Iowa, the only win the Hawks had that was even close to quality, but isn't there just yet. He sat out the game @ Iowa State, another Hawkeye loss.

11. Northwestern (4-4)
Good Wins: None
Bad Losses: Brown, @DePaul
Remaining: None

Just a total garbage team again this year. Their wins are against really bad teams, and their only chance at a decent win, @ DePaul, they had a lead most of the game and let it get away at the end, which I was unfortunate enough to witness. Freshman Michael Thompson looks like a decent player, but the rest of that team is brutal. Maybe if/when they get Coble back, they might be ok, but as for now, their tradition of beating the Gophers every year might be in trouble.

Gophers vs. Colorado State

The Rams are not a scary team. In fact, they're pretty much another cupcake, but at least they come from a second tier conference, the Mountain West, and not the Summit or the Southland, even if they were predicted to finish last in the conference. They've also been terrible for a long time. I thought I remembered them being decent in the last few years with three 7-footers, but the best season they've had lately was last year at 17-13 (6-10 in conference) so I was wrong and they're just a terrible program.

Pretty much the scariest thing about the Rams is that they have Tim Miles as their head coach. Miles was the coach at NDSU when the Bison won at Marquette and at Wisconsin when both were ranked. He's a very good game coach, and was rumored to be a candidate for the Gopher job at one point. The good news is that Monson isn't here anymore, so Miles would have to outcoach Tubby, not Monson's assistants, since they did all the coaching anyway. I don't see Miles outsmarting the new guy.

Colorado St looks like the have a balanced attack, with three players scoring in double figures, guards Marcus Walker (15.9 ppg) and Willis Gardner (12.8 ppg) and seven foot center Stuart Creason (12.4 ppg). That looks impressive, but the Gophers stats would have looked good from last season as well, and it was clear how that team turned out. The fact is the Rams have those three and little else, and overall as a team are horrible. They only shoot 28% from three as a team, and have more turnovers than assists on the season. They are 5-3, but their wins are over teams like Denver and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, while their three losses are by an average of 23 points to Montana, Northern Colorado, and Stanford. Last year, this probably would have been a close game, but this year the new Gophers roll: Minnesota 76, CSU 59.

Gophers vs Sioux Preview

Well I am leaving for Grand Forks tomorrow morning and will only be working a ½ day tomorrow which I plan to spend reading DWG, Gopher and Sioux Hockey sites and checking email. I figured I would get the preview for this weekends series out today so I could officially do nothing tomorrow morning. WWWWW, you want more hockey, you got it. By the way, you really have nice skin.

The most important thing for the Gophers this weekend will be consistency. I now, I sound like Tony Siragusa with that great bit of insight. The biggest issue plaguing the Gophers this year has been putting together three good periods in a game. By all accounts they did this on Saturday and got a 3-1 victory. Lets see if they can carry that over to this weekend. I am betting no, but will keep my fingers crossed.

The Gophers have to get better play from their defenders this weekend. I am not expecting Paul Martin, Keith Ballard and Jordan Leopold to all of the sudden show up this weekend but they should expect more production than what they have been getting out of the blue line. David Fischer, Cade Fairchild and Stewie Bickel have all been getting better as the season goes on. If David Fischer continues to play at his current rate I could see him leaving for Montreal at the end of the year. In large part the defensive issues have been with the two upper classmen. The Upper classmen have been average at best and usually just bad. Evan Kaufman has not developed at all since his Sophomore year and his effort at times has been Hirsch like. Kaufman was embarrassingly bad last Friday to the point I would have been calling him an F’ing C*nt had The Bear been sitting next to me instead of Snake Jr. I have given up all hope for RJ Anderson. RJ is slow, shoots like my wife and has the offensive creativity of a defender from the Cooper Adaptive floor hockey team. Wehrs is still figuring things out and has been up and down which is expected from a true frosh. I am not going to take the time to break down Schack’s game. Schack is the hockey teams version on Kyle Sanden, he really sucks but is big so they let him play once in a while. Don’t expect to see Schack this weekend unless someone’s leg falls off and even then he might not get the call. If the defenders continue to make soft, cross ice passes out of their zone and don’t get pucks in deep this could be a longer weekend then I am already anticipating. Side note that has nothing to do with hockey- Cade Fairchild’s hair looks exactly like the Dawg’s if the Dawg had a better hairline.

I have no idea what to say about or expect from the forwards. Basically they would have trouble scoring if the other team played half the game with no goaltender. That is not good. This is especially troubling when the Gophers will most likely need to score 4 or 5 goals in a game this weekend if they want to win. I really hoped Lucia would put Barriball, Wheeler and Okposo on the same line, but it looks like he has decided to "stay the path." I am no great hockey mind but this would be a perfect weekend to stack the first line and let them skate against UND’s top line. Lucia could then play clutch and grab hockey with his 2nd and 3rd lines and see what happens. Okposo is starting to look either frustrated or bored. I really can’t blame him with the talent he is getting to skate with, but he needs to be dominant and play with some passion this weekend. The rest of the lines just need to play defensive hockey and be willing to go into the corners. There has been way to many guys turning pucks over to avoid hits and guys not getting into the corners to support the puck. Those are the little things the roll players need to do this weekend so I can look forward to more than just calling Sioux fans racists all weekend. Look for the Okposo/Flynn line to match up with UND’s top line this weekend. Lucia did this with success last year and I would guess he will go with it again this weekend. That means Barriball, Wheeler and Gordon (who couldn’t score in the restroom of Jimmy’s Bar) have to carry the offensive load.

These are suppose to be the games the fat/drunk (Frazee) goaltender is at his best. I could buy into that last season, but say bullshit until he proves me wrong this year. If he goes into Grand Forks and steals a game I will never say he sucks again on this blog. Frazee should get both starts this weekend (unless he sucks Friday) so he will have two chances to prove me wrong.

Obviously the big line the Gophers need to control this weekend is the Oshie/Duncan/VandeValde line. If they can shut that line down they have a chance to steal some points this weekend. The other three lines have talent, but don’t light the world on fire. The gophers need to stay out of the penalty box because the Sioux are at or near the top in every special teams category. Defensively, Taylor Chorney is possibly the top offensive defenseman in the country and makes everything run for UND. Robbie Bina has also turned into a offensive threat (at the age of 37) this year and Joe Finley is a big tall goon who actually tries to play this season. In net Jean-Phillippe Lamoureux (or whatever he calls himself now) is statistically the best goalie in the country this year. That being said, I hate Lamoureux as much as any player ever at UND and would love to see him get run this weekend. I know it is not in vogue to cheer for injuries, but I would smile if this "twat" had his season end. UND’s issue at home this year has been blowing teams away in game #1 then coming back flat and handing teams game #2. I am guessing with the Gophers in town they will have a bit more energy both nights.

To sum things up, I see UND sweeping the gophers this weekend. I would love to see one win for the Gophers, but it isn’t going to happen. I know history says the Gophers own UND up at the Nazi Bunker, but history also use to bring a lot of talent with it. Granted the Gophers will be playing the most overrated team in the history of college hockey (Hey Super Sioux Fan, how idiotic is that comment now......Homer!), but this Gopher team just isn’t that good. This is also like the national championship to the people of Grand Forks so UND will be up for both games. Sioux win 6-3 Friday night and 4-2 Saturday. At least I will be able to call Frazee fat and drunk in the future!

P.S. At least Gopher Fans can say the Gophers lead the all-time series 137-120 (122 after Saturday) vs UND!

We just got a new car, and it came with Satellite radio, which allows me to listen to ESPN radio. Let me just say, that Colin Cowherd is almost unlistenable, and rivals Jeff Dubay in the "fun to listen to just to hear what idiotic thing he'll say next" rankings. I don't want to regurgitate all the douchebaggery here, but my favorite had to be "Why does anybody pay attention to Jeff Sagarin's ratings? He didn't even PLAY college football!" Hey idiot, those are the only objective ratings in the whole mix, everything else is subjective and full of bias. You're a jackass.

Speaking of jackasses, here's a nice Ron Gardenhire quote, "With the Twins in search of middle-infield help, one potential target is free agent David Eckstein. "I've always had a lot of respect for him," said Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire. "He catches the ball. He knows how to play. He's a proven winner." No, he's a proven suck. We already have plenty of guys who can't hit like Punto and Casilla. It's just to bad L-Rod is gone. The good news is that some total idiot is going to offer Eckstein $7+ million a year, and no way will the Twins pay even close to that, so we're safe. For now.

I Am Gay For T.J.!

I feel no shame in coming out and saying the following statement. "I am gay for TJ Oshie!" It feels a bit dirty having a huge man crush on a player from UND, but I can’t run from my feelings.

Look at him! He is a cross between Brad Pitt, JT and Carrie Underwood. Not only is he drop dead gorgeous, but he is also the 2nd best hockey player to ever skate at UND (I guess makes me a puck bunny). Here’s hoping that TJ and I cross paths this weekend in Grand Forks so I can express my true feelings to him!

The Most Boring Team Ever

- Remember how I thought Auburn might be good this year? Well, they lost their leading scorer to injury, but watching this West Virginia/Auburn game, it wouldn't matter. They are just horrible. So far it seems like their offensive consists of two options: 1. Throw the ball out of bounds or 2. throw the ball to the other team. Yuck.

- What's with all the love for Vanderbilt? Not only are the ranked #23 right now, but the announcer in this WVU/Auburn game just said they were his sleeper team for the SEC this year - What the hell? Is it because they're 8-0? This team needed triple overtime to beat Southern Alabama at home. They beat a crappy Wake Forest team at home by 3, and that one was down to the wire. They've beaten some mediocre teams at home and that's it. The beat Georgia Tech, but Tech is also 3-4 and might lose to Georgia State tonight. Trust me, Vandy is not that good. I'm betting against them the rest of the year.

- Wow. Allen Iverson has 49 points through three quarters on 17-23 shooting. I can't decide if I should keep watching him or go over to the Gonzaga/Wash St game. The Lakers are doubling him every time he has the ball passed midcourt right now. And if you're wondering, that 49 is the highest individual total in an entire GAME this season.

- This Gonzaga vs. Wash St game is two of my least favorite programs ever. Gonzaga, because every year they're a top 40 type team, who plays in a crappy conference so they never get exposed, and then gets "upset" in the tournament and the nation mourns the poor little team that could. And Wash State because I hate teams that play that slow down Princeton style crap and Derrick Low looks like girl.

- The announcer just said Low is one of the best guards you've never heard of. Seriously? If Wash St and little girl Low got any more press the last two years, they'd be called Duke.

- And now Mark Few has been called one of the best coaches in the HISTORY of college basketball. This is truly a lovefest by these two clowns. No wonder they're on ESPNU.

- Kenyon Martin is still in the NBA? (I'm flipping. AI has cooled, but we have OVER 221 in this game)

- Low kind of looks like a caveman too. He's like a female cave man. And not the hot kind with the big rack and fur bikini. More like the ugly kind with the stupid pony tail and jay leno jaw. And stupid.

- It's 11-8 WSU, and I'm starting to think it was really stupid to pick Gonzaga here. WSU's stupid Princeton crap has a place, and against a not-very-athletic team with a mediocre coach like Gonzaga, it's probably going to work. Dammit.

- I don't know how this happens, but Long Beach is beating Loy-Marymount by 20 right now. Loyola Marymount must be the worst team in history. They probably couldn't even beat Iowa.

- The NBA really sucks. Only in the NBA can two teams combine to score 176 points in three quarters, only need to score a total of 45 more to cover an over, and end up only getting 42. Dumb. I hate the NBA and I hate all of you.

- WSU leads 28-19 at half in what is a pretty boring game. I predict WSU kills a whole bunch of teams this year, loses to UCLA and USC twice each and once each to Arizona and Oregon, and then gets beat in the NCAA tournament in one of the first two rounds, as soon as they face an athletic ACC or SEC team.

- Gonzaga: 8-30 at half. I will say that yes, WSU plays some very tough defense, but that's embarrassing.

- WSU has a guy named Aron Baynes who is basically just Jeff Hagen if Hagen had better footwork, some actual offensive moves, a better touch on his shot, could make free throws, and was an above average defender.

- There are nine white guys on the floor right now. Well, eight white guys and a cavewoman.

- The worst "best player on his team" in the country has to be Gonzaga's Matt Bouldin. Zero points on 0-8 shooting. If you're a goto guy, you have to at least get to the line if things aren't falling.

- They just called Low the "Pride of Hawaii." I don't know, I'd have to go with El Sid. And we've got ourselves a bar burner here, WSU 45, Gonzaga 43 with 3:32 to go. Both teams kind of suck.

- WSU wins 51-47, and have clearly established themselves as the most boring team in the country. Since they're boring, and I'm sure reading this was boring, here's a video of a little girl getting hit in the face with a soccer ball.
