A Whole Bunch of Weekend Tournaments

Well I guess the Gophers at least made it somewhat competitive.  Some other stuff happened around the country too.  Whatever.

COLONIAL CONFERENCE:
The CAA used to be maybe the premier mid-major conference, but alignment can be a bitch and losses of VCU, George Mason, and Old Dominion (all in the top 4 all-time for CAA championships) will do that to you.  There's not a whole lot to love here.  Northeastern beat Florida State and Richmond, while James Madison also beat Richmond.  That's about the list of notable non-conference victories.  You're also looking at four teams tied at the top of the conference at 12-6 so yeah, another crap shoot.

FAVORITE:  William & Mary.  The Tribe grab the #1 seed via tiebreakers, and although Northeastern has a slightly better kenpom rating it's not really that big a deal because I have no idea about this conference anyway.  They also went 5-1 against the three other teams they tied with (which was probably the tie breaker) which really just means they lost to a whole bunch of bad teams.  The Tribe also boast a big time scorer in Marcus Thornton (no not that one.  Or that one) at 19.4ppg, and a guy who I can only assume will be Defensive Player of the Year in Terry Tarpey considering he led the CAA in rebounding (8.4pg), blocks (1.4pg), and steals (1.8pg).  Damn that's impressive.

SLEEPER:  Hofstra.  They finished just behind the mishmash at the top at 10-8 in conference play, and the Pride most interest me because they can score.  They play at an insane tempo, don't turn the ball over, and are a great shooting team all of which means POINTS.  They are 16th in the country in points per game this year, and if you take out the teams which helped their averages beating up on a bunch of bottom feeder teams, while Hofstra is a bottom feeder team (or maybe middle, if I'm feeling generous) the Pride get into the top 10.  Anybody who can score like that has a chance to get hot, and hot is deadly in March.  Also wouldn't hurt to consider playing a little bit of defense.

THE PICK:  Hofstra.  When the conference is as jumbled as this, it seems to best to me to find something that stands out about someone.  Northeastern has those two "good" wins, but closed the season on a troubling skid.  William & Mary went 5-1 against the other top teams, but have the worst defense in the conference.  Delaware has the league's leading scorer but is a mess in every other way, and Wilmington can play D but can't score.  I considered James Madison, who finished out the year winning six of seven, but only one of those wins was against a good team.  Hofstra, along with that offense, tightened up the defense in conference play and is one of only two conference teams (along with Northeastern) to finish in the top 3 in the CAA in both offensive and defensive efficiency in conference play.  Good enough.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE:
When you take the Davidson out of the SoCon, you weaken the SoCon, who ranks as a bottom nine conference this season per kenpom.  You also make things more competitive and weirder since you don't have one time gallivanting around dominating everyone with all their fancy three pointers.  Three teams ended up with double digit conference wins this year, and two of them enter the conference tournament with 20+ wins on the season overall.

FAVORITE:  Wofford.  The Terriers have been the best non-Davidson SoCon team over the years, making the NCAA Tournament three of the last five seasons and they're in the drivers seat again this year after going 16-2.  They didn't just beat up on conference foes either, as they picked up nice wins over Iona and North Carolina State in the early season.  If not for a terrible loss to Citadel and maybe one other good win they could have been a bubble team.  Leading scorer Karl Cochran (15ppg) was just named SoCon player of the year, and when the Gophers played Wofford last year I featured him as a great chucker.  He's still taking a silly amount of his team's shots (33%) but his shooting and assist levels have reach a point where I can't really call him a chucker anymore.  Just a volume shooter.

SLEEPER:  Chattanooga.  I don't know if it really counts as a sleeper when a team finished 15-3 and one game back, but outside of Wofford, Nooga, and Mercer the rest of this conference is horrendous.  I like Chattanooga because they can control the paint.  Actually their advanced numbers say they don't really control the paint, but they do have two guys who finished in the top 5 in the conference in rebounding, one of which who finished first in blocked shots with 3.3 per game, so it sure sounds like they could control the paint.  One thing they actually are is battle tested, having played four overtimes this year, going 3-1.  They also finished out on a six game win streak.

THE PICK:  Wofford.  No, they're no Davidson, but they're awfully hard to pick against.  The Terriers were in the top 2 in conference play in nearly every metric, and the only team in the top 3 in both offensive and defensive efficiency.  They're the second best shooting team and the hardest team to make baskets against.  Their top competition has serious flaws, and the Terriers have plenty of tournament experience.  Lotta pro-Wofford reasons piling up.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE:
Just like every year in the WCC it comes down to Gonzaga being in, one team being on the bubble (this year it's BYU), and then a whole bunch of spoiler teams out to ruin some other team's day.  This tournament became a lot less important for BYU after they won at Gonzaga last week.  Instead of maybe needing to win it, they probably just need to avoid a bad loss in their opener against either Santa Clara or Loyola Marymount, two teams they swept, and they might still end up ok if they lose that one anyway.  Win that one and then beat St. Mary's?  In, and good, because the Haws/Collinsworth combo rules.

FAVORITE:  Gonzaga.  Everyone always complains that Gonzaga is always overseeded because they don't play anyone, and then usually Gonzaga goes out and gets upset earlier than their seed should dictate.  I could sit here and go through the usual arguments:  tough non-conference schedule, great RPI and kenpom numbers, wins over SMU, Georgia, St. John's, UCLA, Memphis, and BYU with their only losses that BYU one and an overtime loss on the road at Arizona, and they're point to a good if not great team.  But you can make that same argument every year, and every year the same results.  One of these years, Gonzaga is going to have to prove it.

SLEEPER:  Pepperdine.  Not just because Rico Tucker went there, but because of their defense and slow it down tempo could throw a team like Gonzaga off.  It certainly worked against BYU earlier this year, where Pepperdine slowed the game down and shut off the three point line and it worked to the tune of a 67-61 victory.  The only other team to hold BYU under 70 points this season was defensive juggernaut Utah, so that's an impressive feat.  Look at the Waves 10-8 WCC record this year and they swept BYU, split with St. Mary's, and lost by 2 at home and 8 on the road versus Gonzaga.  Their 3-point stifling defense clearly can throw good teams for a loop (#1 in 3pt defense in the country at just 26% allowed) and it could work here, if they can manage to not get upset along the way.

THE PICK:  Gonzaga.  Their nearest contenders, BYU and St. Mary's, have some major flaws, while Gonzaga pretty much appears to be a mostly unstoppable machine (BYU loss notwithstanding), just like every year.  Considering they've won this tournament the last two years, and three of the last four, might as well stick with them.

SUMMIT LEAGUE:
The Summit is a total mess.  First, they have nine teams which is like, come on.  Now it's fine this year because Omaha is still in their transition phase, thus ineligible for the NCAA Tournament thus ineligible for the Summit Tournament.  To add to that, seven of the league's nine teams won between 6 and 12 games.  According to kenpom, however, there is a clear favorite.

FAVORITE:  South Dakota State.  The Jackrabbits, well known to most Gopher fans, rank 108th by kenpom, over 50 spots higher than their closest competition (NDSU).  The tournament is played in South Dakota (though in Sioux Falls, where USD is not located).  They have two of kenpom's top 5 players in the conference in Cody Larson and Deondre Parks, who can both do a little bit of everything.  Tops in both offensive and defensive efficiency in league play, and by a wide margin, in an average game SDSU would outscore their Summit opponents by 17 points.  Granted that number is skewed by some huge blowouts, but it's still impressive.

SLEEPER:  IP-Fort Wayne.  The Mastodons (for real) have a sweet name and went 9-7 in Summit play, but what makes them interesting is a sleeper is that they have a win over each of the three teams ahead of them.  Plus, Mastodons.

THE PICK:  North Dakota State.  Pretty sure this will come down to SDSU vs. NDSU as god has decried, with both teams raining three balls from the sky as they are inclined to do.  If that happens I'm pretty sure SDSU will win since the Bison can't guard against the three at all.  The reason I'm going with NDSU is I don't like how the bracket sets up for the Jackrabbits.  If South Dakota beats Fort Wayne, and they'll likely be favored by 3 or so and have some kind of home court advantage, they'll get SDSU next.  The same Jackrabbit squad they just beat by 16 in Sioux Falls Vermillion.  Good chance SDSU doesn't even reach the championship.

Outside the conference tournaments there is just a ton of relevant action.  I started to list games but I had like, 5 of the first 10 listed and who has that kind of time?  Just hunker down and watch.

Pepperdine Rocks

Live blog the Pepperdine game? Of course, but first:

1. Georgetown is the suck. If you even consider putting Georgetown in your final four, you should seriously stop watching sports.

2. Kansas is the jesus of basketball. If the NCAA was Conference USA, Kansas would be Memphis.

11:10 - Blog slightly delayed due to crazy pregnant wife wanting to watch Made on MTV. TiVo initiated.

12:19 - Made over. Whitley went from a ballerina to a boxer. She won her first match, and learned a lot about love. And really, isn't that what it's all about?

12:20 - Announcers sucking off Gonzaga already. Also, it seems half the crowd is pro-Zags, but it's at Pepperdine. That's ok, Rico will dunk all over Pargo.

12:21 - Rico not starting. This is some bullshit right here.

12:22 - Remember when Pepperdine was good? That one year with all the guys with afros and the guy named something like Brazza or Barrazza or something and I think they beat Indiana in the tournament? Remember that? That was sweet.

12:23 - I think I watched that Pepperdine/Indiana game at the Bebop in Blaine. How sad is that? Also, I'm plenty drunk right now and have no plans to stop.

12:25 - Worst announcers in history.

12:25 - Rico in for about thirty seconds, and scores, going one-on-three, making the announcer go "whoo hoo hoo" after he breaks Pargo's ankles. So good.

12:27 - Rico steal, and would have been an assist if this was hockey. Speaking of hockey, there was some faggy hockey match on TV at the bar, and a fight broke out, and everybody watching at the bar got an erection. Such a gay sport.

12:28 - Foul on Rico because the ref is a racist.

12:29 - Pepperdine is brutal. No wonder Rico has to try to do everything himself. Just threw a perfect lob, and stupid unathletic guy couldn't go and get it. Followed up by crazy white boy trying to do a turnaround fadeaway in the post, when poor Rico was open in the corner.

12:32 - Pargo can't handle Rico. Fouls him after getting beat.

12:33 - 17-6 Gonzaga. Pepperdine +13.5 looking not awesome here.

12:35 - Pepperdine is literally the worst team I've seen this year. Yikes.

12:38 - Needs more Rico.

12:39 - I forgot to mention that when I was watching the Gopher/Penn State game with $nake and Bogart, we turned $20 into $225 playing pulltabs. So that was pretty sweet.

12:40 - Gonzaga on pace for 136 points. Also, it's the Fargo-Moorhead Acro team at halftime this Sunday against Michigan State, if you're into that sort of thing. Which I am. Not gymnastics as a whole, I mean, I'm straight and everything. I like the ladies, they really rev my engine. I'm just saying the FM Acro team is totally awesome.

12:42 - Steal by Rico. Layup by Rico. Need more Rico.

12:43 - Pepperdine offense: four guys stand around the three point line without really moving, one guy half-heartedly tries to post up. Pepperdine defense: None.

12:46 - So this is funny and sad. Pepperdine plays a total uptempo run run run type of game. But they're the ones leaning over, grabbing their shorts, and all tired and out of shape right now. That's some great coaching there.

12:49 - Rico gets a rebound, goes coast-to-coast, makes a great pass, and it goes off his stupid teammate's hands and out of bounds. Somehow, that's a turnover to Rico. If someone would just get him some decent teammates, we'd have total domination.

12:52 - I'm not completely paying attention anymore, but I believe Pepperdine has gone seventeen minutes without getting a shot off. On the brightside, KFC has brought back the sauceless hot wing, so that's pretty sweet.

12:56- I have no idea who that girl in the picture above is, but the internet told me she attended Pepperdine. I see no need to argue.

12:57 - Halftime score: Gonzaga 50, Pepperdine 27. Here's a summary: Pepperdine turnover, Gonzaga layup, Pepperdine missed shot, Gonzaga wide open three, repeat ad infinitum. Also, Rico is awesome and should play more.

12:59 - Pepperdine has 11 turnovers and 12 made field goals. Also, Georgetown is a shitbox team.

1:00 - Rico is starting the second half, this can only lead to good things. Also, speaking of shitbox teams, I have an excellent Colts picture to use, but not yet. I'm sure I'll put it up at some point next week when I'm in Dallas.

1:01- Wow, Rico slaps the ball away from Bouldin, but the rest of the team is so crappy they can't be bothered to get the loose ball and we have a layup by Gonzaga.

1:03 - I really can't stress this enough: Pepperdine may very well be the worst college basketball team of all time. Last year's Gophers would have beaten them by 20.

1:04 - So some d-bag white guard on Pepp was wide open, completely uncovered, and he missed. Dude, you're white and not tall. Your only skill is shooting. You can't miss that shot. Rico is going to cap you. Except he believes in Jesus and all that. So I guess not. This game is very not exciting. Gonzaga 60, Pepperdine 27.

1:12 - Some tall white dude for Pepperdine just tried to make a layup but hit the bottom of the rim. Like the kind of thing you see the uncoordinated kids, or wrestlers, do in high school gym class.

1:13 - Pepperdine just cut it to thirty with 14:30 left. You read that correctly.

1:17 - Those dicks never give Rico the ball.

1:20 - Rico steal and assist. Clearly the catalyst needed to come back from a thirty point deficit.

1:21 - If you're wondering, the Zags went ahead and let Josh Heytveldt back on teh team. Last year he got booted off the team for dealing drugs, but I'm sure he's learned his lesson so now he's back. Should've shown Courtney James some leniancy.

1:23 - So some idiot Pepperdine guy turns it over, and on the fast break Rico makes an absolutely ridiculously awesome block on a layup. Of course, all the rest of the Pepperdine guys are fat lazy idiots, and a Gonzaga guy just picks it up and lays it in. Poor Rico.

1:24 - Heytveldt doesn't look like a drug-dealer. He looks like a Neo-Nazi.

1:25 - Steal by Tucker. Takes it down and hits the pull-up three. Just sick.

1:34 - Oh, if you're wondering how Mychel Thompson looks, I seriously haven't even noticed him. Since he plays for Pepperdine and isn't named Rico, I'm going to assume he's a giant piece of crap. He's no his dad.

1:44 - Thank god it's over. 90-57 Gonzaga. Rico Tucker = Jesus.

Minnesota 68, Iowa State 58

Wow, what a great win for the Gophers, and a thrilling game as well. While I was watching the game....oh wait, I couldn't watch the game because whoever is the jackass in charge of putting games on tv is a big giant ass. I know, there was that thing where you pay $10 a month and you could have watched it on your computer, but how gay is that? And how does that help the people that have a football game that night and can't be at their computer? Stupid stupid stupid.

Seriously, I can't even comment on the game, because there's no way to watch it. Did the Gophers win because they are that good or because ISU was that bad? I don't know. I do know that they only had 8 assists to 10 turnovers, which scares me, but they outrebounded a team, and I'm not sure that ever happened in the last five years. And I'd love to know how often Dan Coleman was guarding ISU's Brackins, who finished with 23 points on 11-16 shooting. Does this mean Coleman didn't learn how to play defense yet? Or was there something else? I'll never know because of captain McDickholeguy who won't let me watch the game.

The best I can say is to check out From the Barn's Recap. It sounds like he got suckered into paying the $10 to watch the game, and he has a pretty solid recap and writes things that make me laugh.

Also, I just want to point out again that tonight is Rico Tucker vs. Dan Monson. Jesus vs. Devil, if you will. These teams are both struggling - well, they're terrible really - but Pepperdine should handle them. Especially if the Waves coach will let poor Rico run free. I don't know what he did to him, but the last game Rico managed to turn the ball over six times in only fifteen minutes of play. That's clearly poor coaching. For the season, Tucker leads the team in assists and steals, and NOT in turnovers. He also is struggling with his shot so far, but it'll come around.

Long Beach has lost by forty against BYU and 18 against Montana State, but does have the only win between these two teams. Pepperdine is an 8 point favorite, and I really, really don't want to bet on this game because these teams are a couple of junkpiles. However, I feel like I must back Good vs. Evil, because if I don't, who will? Who will?

I also want to draw your attention quickly to Rhode Island @ Boston College. If you remember when I was to dumb enough to think I would preview the top fifty teams, I thought Rhode Island could be sneaky good. Well, the Rams are 5-0 right now, after winning the Glenn Wilkes Classic (the what?) by beating South Florida, Stetson, and UAB. This game here at B.C. is a real, true test of how good they are this year. If they knock off the Eagles, there are officially two very good teams in the A-10.

And if you're wondering, we played the best team in our league last night (we're #2), and after scoring on the last play of the game to draw within two, were unable to convert the 2-pt conversion for the tie due to Theory tweaking his knee running his route and being unable to get up for a high pass, losing a heartbreaker 20-18.

St. Louis +6 @ Missouri St (W)
Louisville -5 @ UNLV (W)
Pepperdine -8 vs. LBSU (W)
Ariz State PK vs. LSU (W)
Illinois -5 vs. Okla State (W)
Washington +4 vs. Texas A&M (L)
Syracuse -2.5 vs. Ohio St (L)
Marquette +4.5 vs. Duke (W)
Kansas -29 vs. North Arizona (W)
Michigan +8.5 vs. Butler (L)

Season: 29-25

Also, after another horrendous week at 4-11-1, my NFL record has fallen below .500. Since I don't really feel like doing all the games at once, here are my thanksgiving day picks:

Detroit +3.5 vs. Green Bay
Dallas -14 vs. NYJ
Indy -12 @ Atlanta

Season: 73-75-10

It's Rico Time

Rico Tucker is going to dominate more than he was going to dominate before, now that Pepperdine's leading scorer and awesome name haver Kingsley Costain was kicked off the team for violating school policy.

There's some discussion and speculation here on the Pepperdine boards, but the only real fact is that Rico is going to dominate even more with one less guy trying to get to shoot the ball. He will have to worry about about the coaches son, Jason Walberg, who averaged 14 ppg in five games last year and will probably have his dad trying to feed him the ball, but Rico should still dominate. If he and his cousin, top 100 6-6 freshman Tyrone Shelley, just play the two man game they'll be fine.

Tucker participated in both the 3-point contest and dunk contest at the Waves Midnight Madness. He lost his 3-point match, and as far as the dunk contest goes, here's how Pepperdinesports.com summed it up:

'Daniel Johnson and Mychel Thompson were the dunkers for the Blue squad, while Tyrone Shelley and Rico Tucker did the honors for the Orange squad. It wasn’t much of a contest, as Tucker scored perfect 40s during all three rounds. He did a 360 in the first round, a windmill in the second, and for his final dunk he brought the ball down to his knees and brought it back up over his head for a reverse jam.'

He's so awesome.

Awesome

Looking over this year's basketball schedule for Long Beach State, they play at Pepperdine on November 20th.

Long Beach State. Who hired Dan Monson.

Pepperdine. Where Rico Tucker transferred to after Dan Monson basically ran him off the team even though Tucker was the best athlete on the team and with some patience and a good coach could have been a very good player.

Rico vs. Monson. November 20th. I hope Rico goes for 40.

Thanks once again to the Gopher Hole for bringing this up.
